This Is Me + That's Enough...

Scrolling through Instagram has been feeling like a walk through a minefield for my self esteem, lately. Anyone else?
The history of advertising would indicate that the industry has long been criticized for upholding unrealistic standards of success and beauty; at least it has been acknowledged that the images are "idealized". More recently, however, the impossible standards are not set by celeberties and models, rather friends and "influencers" on social media.
Sure, I know IG is a "highlight reel" but even with this rational thought in mind, I still think...."My highlight reel is looking rather weak!" Whether it's coming across other people on vacations I can't afford, girls with perfectly toned bodies, effortless family photos or girl bosses kicking ass in their businesses; this is the perfect storm for self doubt.
The thought of "I'll never be as cool/skinny/pretty/successful/__{fill in the blank}__ as her"
reek of "I am not enough"
Why do I share this? Well, chances are, I am not alone; and neither are you. Perhaps one of my posts sparked this thought in you? Perhaps one of your posts sparked this thought in me?
But also, the lack perfectly retouched/aesthetic photos I have sometimes hinders my posts on social media or from publishing a blog post. Believe it or not, I don't happen to have a photographer following me around, or hair and make up done. Hell, most of the time I haven't even showered after my work out! Clearly, the content that represents me, my blog or my message is a #thisisme vibe. That is what attracted you to me + I need to remember that!
As someone who takes in the world visually, I am a huge fan of Instagram! It's so great for checking out new fashion trends, interesting food+ travel, workout ideas, and other inspirational visuals. However, there’s another dimension to social media that’s not so positive: the retouching, overuse of filters, the professional photographer shots that are intentionally set up so casually with the illusion that it's just a candid selfie. This is the crux of what creates an unattainable idea of lifestyle, beauty + success that encourages the comparison game... thus, affecting people’s self-esteem.
So the next time you find yourself on social media and thinking that someone else's life is so much better than yours, try these 5 game changers. (I'll be putting these to work myself!)
1. Do something original.
Creativity is a fabulous way to take action against low moments. A creative form of self-expression is one of the ways you can tap back into that sense of accomplishment and empowerment that is the heart of what you do! Take this as an opportunity to remind yourself of how talented you are in your own unique way.
2. Realize the infinite.
Just because you see someone else having a great life doesn't mean your life isn't great, too. Sometimes what you envy in others is something you have too, but you're just not leaning into it yet. Remember there is no finite amount of success for one particular field or industry. The more greatness out in the universe, the better off we all are!
3. Spread the love.
Rather than comparing yourself to another girl in IG who is doing her thing... fan girl her instead! Send a message of encouragement or admiration. This will shift your energy from envy to positivity.
4. What are your influences?
Who are you listening to? What are your reading? Who do you spend the most time with? How do you occupy your free time?
All of these things influence your energy, internal dialogue and how you view the world.
5. Gratitude.
Appreciate what you do have. Where else do you already have what you want? What do you see around you that you love? What amazing people, experiences or manifestations do you already have? Focus into these more often!
And if all else fails!....Take a break from socials! Period.
Remember:
You've got sparkle of your own!
You are NOT defined by the amount of followers or likes
You are more than enough
If you're looking to elevate, Lean the *F* in
So I will continue to be over here posting real captures of sweet moments with my daughter with my iPhone. NDB!

Go on girl,
XO, Kat
