Why I'm NOT Getting "Bikini Body Ready" This Summer

Full transparency here: Only a few short years back I was the one in the gym #Gettingbikiniready or posting pictures saying "bikini season is right around the corner" blah, blah, blah. At the the time, I did not realize I was doing more psychological damage, rather than inspiring/nurturing my dreams of being "bikini body ready" AKA healthy and self confident.

"Bikini body ready"? What does this even mean!? Who defines this?

Well, I guess there is this universal meaning that is artificially painted and portrayed through the fitness industry, resort advertisements, clothing brands, the entertainment industry, the food industry, pop culture, social media (...pretty much every where, let's be honest).

The image that I picture consists of a skinny, exotic looking white woman, with a sexy bikini, a golden yet natural tan, and effortless looking "beach waves" in her hair.

HAS ANYONE'S HAIR EVERY REALLY NATURALLY DONE THAT? JUST CURIOUS...if so, teach me your ways!

In my belief, this concept is really all rooted in self confidence, or lack thereof.

Being able to feel confident in each season of your life, no matter what you're wearing ( or not wearing) + who you're with; (or not with).

Using a more cognitive behavioral approach with my own thoughts has been so critical in my own quest for more self confidence.

I can better evaluate 'helpful thoughts' vs 'damaging thoughts'.

For me, in a mentally healthy place; I can look at my body in all stages and still have love for myself, simply for the sake of loving myself... this is truly a GIFT! It has taken some time to arrive here; and I admit, there is still limitless space for me to continue to elevate.

What would it be like for you if you ditched the whole "bikini body ready" plan this year? This includes restricting foods you like to enjoy, adding in unnecessary cardio at the gym, fasting, or simply using the verbiage "bikini body ready". AND you shifted to an "EVERY body" mindset. This includes believing YOU (and everyone else who wants) are worthy + capable of building the self confidence to support a healthier image of yourself and your body in all stages.

There's always going to be something to "get ready for"; whether it's the new year, the holidays, family reunion, a vacation, a wedding, a pregnancy, postpartum, you name it!

How would it look if you were kind enough to yourself that you didn't need to "get ready", but you STAY ready. Stay ready by adopting a healthy habit or two?

What two things can you add into your life to start shifting away from a bikini body mindset and into an EVERY body mindset?

Here are a few ideas:

1. Stop being so damn hard on yourself.

2. TRY to refrain from talking badly about yourself or how you look in pictures or in the mirror! Perhaps you can try a transitional step by saying "Well that's not the most flattering picture of me"... rather than something far worse!

3. Catch yourself from criticizing other women's bodies, bikini mode or not! Girl, this one is super important! Humans will not act or react unless there is some type of emotional attachment. The next time you feel compelled to talk badly about another women, think about how this may be a reflection of you. Maybe it bothers you in someone else because its to painful for you to recognize it in yourself...deep I know, But 100% true.

(More on exploring this with individual work.)

4. Nothing is ever a loss. Chalk it up as a learning experience. Try something new, but absolutely hate it!? Consider this a learning experiment rather than a failure.

5. Identify a friend that challenges your negative beliefs. They're easily identified as a person that makes you feel empowered and refreshed after hanging out with them!? Did you think of one yet?...well that's your girl (or guy!) Perhaps you let them know how you value their friendship and company.

6. Eat foods that you enjoy. Yes I mean donuts and french fries too! Over indulgence in these types of food is certainly not healthy to fuel your body or your mind. While, too much restriction of these types of foods is just as unhealthy! Find your sweet spot (PUN INTENDED). It may not be an even "balance" (I use air quotes here because I think this term is over used) but really finding a pattern that works for you and your palate satisfaction.

7. Have fun during your workouts. Maybe you love the stair-master, or maybe you love a hot yoga class...whatever you find yourself smiling + sweating the most in, there is your winner! Do THAT often!

I'll just be over here singin' the jams in my workouts + eating donuts!

Go on girl,

XO, Kat
